The History Of Margaritas (& How To Make The Perfect One!)
Updated: Oct 21, 2021

Having one, two, or even a few cocktails can put a little extra sparkle in a night out. Everyone over the age of 21 should know how to make a fantastic cocktail. Margaritas are a crowd-pleaser, and they couldn’t be easier to make.
Even though the margarita is such a popular drink, no one really knows who the original creator was. There are several different stories as to how the drink came to be, but one thing most people can agree on is that someone invented it in the mid-1900s.
It’s amazing that this drink became so popular in such a short amount of time. It’s so widespread that thousands of variations have been invented based on the original recipe. Different flavors and elements have been added over the years to create completely unique and delicious drinks.
In 1971, Mariano Martinez changed the margarita game. He created the first frozen margarita machine at his restaurant in Dallas, Texas. After guests complained that their margaritas weren’t consistent, he made this innovative invention that ended up changing the course of margarita history.
It was so revolutionary that the original machine is now in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. We will now and forever remember it as a remarkable moment in history.
It only takes six simple ingredients to make this classic cocktail. Follow the steps, use the right amount of each component, and you’ll have the best margarita making skills in town.
You’ll need
1 ½ ounce of silver tequila
1 ounce of triple sec
¾ of an ounce of refreshing freshly squeezed lime juice
Optional: simple syrup or sweetener
Salt
Lime wedge
First, you must prep your glass. Pour salt on a small plate or in a small dish. This is what you will be using to put salt around your rim.
Take a lime wedge and coat the entire edge of your glass. Turn it over and place the moistened rim of the glass in the salt. The salt will stick and leave you with a perfectly prepped glass. Now it’s time to make the actual drink.
Fill a cocktail shaker all the way to the top with ice. Measure and combine the rest of the listed ingredients in the shaker. Now for the fun part: shake up your drink and have some fun with it!
After you’ve shaken for about 20 seconds, strain the drink into your prepared glass. The final step is to enjoy! Just make sure to enjoy them responsibly. Being able to make your own margaritas is a privilege and a big responsibility. Every one of your friends will want one if you make them right!
Making your own margaritas sounds great in theory, but it also requires a lot of work. Sometimes, you just want to enjoy the drink and leave the cocktail making up to the professionals. It can get overwhelming if all your friends want a margarita too. Making drinks for a bunch of people doesn’t sound like as much fun as just making them for yourself.
