Our Favorite Frozen Margaritas

Updated: Jan 19, 2022

frozen margaritas

Frozen margaritas are one of Mexican culture’s most popular alcoholic drinks--and with good reason! With just the right tequila, this tasty beverage is great frozen or on the rocks, and pairs well with tacos. At Tequila Sunrise Mexican Grill, our frozen margaritas are a point of pride. They’re one of our most popular items on the menu, both during happy hour and other times.

Did you know that frozen margaritas are available in a wide variety of flavors, as well as a colorful history? Read on to learn more about our favorite flavors, and other reasons we love this fun drink!

A Brief Trip to Margaritaville

Some popular foods and beverages are hard to pin down to a single origin, and frozen margaritas are one of them. In fact, more than one person has claimed to be the inventor of this popular drink, so the exact inventor is a bit of a mystery. It’s commonly believed that Carlos “Danny” Herrera came up with the drink at his Tijuana restaurant around 1938. Supposedly, he had a picky patron who liked liquor a very certain way, so he made up what we know as a tequila shot, combined with salt and a lime wedge. The rest, as they say, is history.

Still other historians say the real frozen margarita inventor is a Dallas socialite appropriately named Margarita Sames, who created the drink for her friends in the 1940s. The drink supposedly gained popularity when a well-connected guest, Tommy Hilton, added the drink to the bar menu of his hotel.

The exact inventor and origin of the frozen margarita may never be known, but one thing that is agreed upon is the timeframe it came to existence. The 1930s and 40s saw the rise of this beverage, and it’s only grown in fame since. Other recipes from that era include citrus juice and grenadine with shaved ice. It seems there are almost as many variations of this drink as there are people who claimed to invent it!
