Fort Lauderdale's Best Vegetarian & Vegan Mexican Food

Vegan Mexican food

Are you a vegan wondering if there’s still a way to take part in Taco Tuesday? Thankfully, it is possible to eat vegan at Mexican restaurants. Even if there are no specific vegan options on the menu, plenty of dishes can be modified to suit your dietary needs. Ingredients like beans, veggies, and chiles have been staples in Mexican dishes for centuries.

Vegan Mexican food is more common than you think. Read on to learn some tricks for going meatless with Mexican cuisine.

Making Your Mexican Vegan

The following ingredients are common in Mexican dishes, and are safe substitutes for meat that are still delicious and filling:

Beans

Ask your server if the beans are prepared with meat. If the beans are in fact vegetarian, then you can ask to swap out the meat in almost any dish for beans instead (and request to hold the cheese!).

Rice

If the rice is made without meat stock, you’re golden. Rice and beans can be a relatively inexpensive and satisfying meal when prepared with traditional Mexican spices and served with a side of veggies.

Tortillas and Corn Items

Packaged tortillas tend to be vegan. If the tortillas are made in-house, ask if they are made with lard. If the tortillas are in fact meat-free, a rice and bean burrito is your new staple.

Chips and Guacamole

Many things in life are unreliable, but chips and guacamole, salsa, or pico de gallo will never let you down. Paired with a margarita, this is a classic Mexican appetizer that’s always a crowd pleaser.
