At Tequila Sunrise Mexican Grill, we believe that when life hands you limes, you should make margaritas. We make margaritas all the time, but we are extra passionate about this on Taco Tuesday and National Margarita Day. On this day, we take care to pay homage to authentic Mexican cuisine – but especially, obviously, tacos.
Also, worth celebrating is National Margarita Day, which is recognized on February 22nd. To honor both days, we suggest pairing your tacos with a margarita, any day of the year. It’s the only right thing to do.
Read on to learn more about these two very important dates in Mexican culture.
History Of Taco Tuesday
The exact origins of the phrase “Taco Tuesday” are hard to determine. Different businesses have battled in court over who owns copyright, with Taco John’s emerging as the true originator in the late 70s and early 80s.
The history of taco deals on Tuesdays dates to the 1930s, where they were advertised in the classifieds section of local newspapers. Restaurants quickly caught on to this trend, and Taco Tuesday has essentially become a Mexican-American tradition.
History of National Margarita Day
Margaritas date back to the 1930s, though the exact inventor is also unknown. It was popularized by Tommy Hilton, who brought the cocktail recipe to his hotel chains and had his restaurants add it to their menu. The drink was apparently named for Margarita Sames, a socialite from Dallas, who claims she is the one who invented the drink. We may never know for sure, but one thing we do know: margaritas are delicious!
As for National Margarita Day, once again, we’re not sure who invented it. But when a bartender used a soft serve ice cream machine to make frozen margaritas, it further launched the drink into popularity with the public. Available in a variety of flavors, from strawberry to peach to mango, margaritas remain one of the most-loved tequila-based drinks.
